In 1964 Donald Ross predicted that the noise of shipping would increase by a factor of 10. He was correct; the background noise in the open oceans is now 10dB louder that it was in 1964 due to shipping noise. While this level may not increase much in the oncoming years, the distribution will increase with the development of ports, offshore industrial processing, service ships to minerals and petroleum extraction, and recreational vessels.
